How to Set Up AI Auto-Replies for Instagram DMs in 5 Minutes

Before you start

There are three things you need before beginning this setup:

An Instagram Business account. Not a personal account. If yours is personal, convert it for free in Instagram Settings → Account → Switch to Professional Account. Takes 2 minutes and doesn't affect your existing content or followers.

The Instagram account connected to a Facebook Page. This is a Meta requirement — their Messaging API requires an Instagram Business account linked to a Facebook Page to function. If you don't have a Facebook Page, create a basic one and link it in Instagram Settings → Linked Accounts.

If your Instagram is already a business account linked to a Facebook Page, you're ready to start. The whole setup — from account creation to first AI reply — takes under 5 minutes.

Step 1 — Connect your Instagram via Meta OAuth

After creating your ReplyMind account, navigate to the Connect page in your dashboard. Click “Connect Facebook & Instagram” — you'll be redirected to Meta's standard permission screen.

Log in with the Facebook account connected to your business Page. Grant the requested permissions — ReplyMind needs read access to incoming messages and permission to send replies. Select your Facebook Page and linked Instagram account. Click Confirm.

This uses Meta's official OAuth flow. ReplyMind never stores your Instagram or Facebook password — only the access token Meta issues to your account. If you revoke the connection at any time, the token is invalidated and ReplyMind loses all access immediately.

Step 2 — Configure your business context

This is the most important step. Navigate to Business in your dashboard and fill in your business profile. The AI uses this information to generate every reply — so the more accurate and detailed it is, the better your replies will be.

At minimum, include: business name, what you do (in plain language), opening hours, location if relevant, key services or products with pricing, and your preferred tone (formal, casual, warm, etc.).

You can also add specific instructions: “always offer a free first consultation,” “never discuss competitor pricing,” or “if someone asks about returns, direct them to support@yourbusiness.com.” These instructions override the default AI behavior.

Step 3 — Enable AI replies

Navigate to AI Config in your dashboard. Select ReplyMind AI (powered by Claude) as your provider. Adjust the confidence threshold if needed — messages below this score will be escalated to you instead of auto-replied. The default (0.7) works well for most businesses starting out.

What to expect once you're live

Common questions about Instagram AI replies
